Alishan

Getting to Know Alishan

Located in southern Taiwan, Alishan National Scenic Area is one of the island’s most beloved destinations. Known for its misty forest trails, ancient trees, and breathtaking mountain views, it’s a place where Taiwan’s natural beauty and indigenous heritage come together.

The Alishan mountain range reaches an average height of 2,500m, with peaks like Datashan offering panoramic views, and nearby Yushan (Jade Mountain), Taiwan’s highest, visible on clear days. The area has long been home to the Tsou Aboriginal tribe, and modern tourism developed around the Alishan Forest Railway-originally built for logging during the Japanese era.

Alishan’s high elevation creates a cooler alpine climate, ideal for growing some of the world’s finest Oolong tea. Scenic wooden trails lead through cypress forests, including paths to the Sacred Tree and viewing platforms for sunrises above the clouds.

A must-do experience is a ride on the Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi to Fenqihu, followed by leisurely hikes to cherry blossoms in spring or golden foliage in autumn. Trek to tea plantations, wasabi farms, or the majestic Jiao Lung Waterfall.

Celebrate the New Year at the “Sunrise Impression Concert,” held on January 1st, welcoming the first light with music amid the mountains. For a deeper cultural encounter, visit Leye Village and learn about Tsou traditions, or walk the tranquil Leye Mihu Trail through peaceful bamboo groves.

Don’t miss Fenqihu Town, often bypassed but rich in charm with bamboo cuisine, fireflies, and temple ruins. Cap your visit with a tea tasting at a high mountain plantation-an unforgettable way to connect with Taiwan’s land and culture.
