Almora

Almora – Cultural Gem of the Kumaon Hills

Tucked away in a serene corner of Uttarakhand, near the borders of Nepal and Tibet, Almora is steeped in history and culture. Founded by the Chand Dynasty in 1560, it later saw fierce conflict during the Gurkha Wars of 1814–15, when the British heavily bombarded the area in an attempt to reclaim it.

A Cultural and Historical Hub
Set on a scenic horseshoe-shaped ridge, Almora is a bustling market town and administrative center known as the cultural capital of Kumaon. The town’s stone-paved streets, intricately carved wooden homes, and colorful murals speak volumes about its rich heritage. It’s also remembered for its links to Jim Corbett’s legendary tiger encounters.

Gateway to Rural Kumaon
Almora offers access to the foothills of the Himalayas and is the perfect launch point for experiencing authentic rural life in the Kumaon region. Small villages nearby give visitors a firsthand view of traditional lifestyles and breathtaking natural scenery.
