Dien Bien

Discover Dien Bien Phu: Vietnam’s Historic Battleground of Freedom

Tucked away in the Muong Thanh valley in northwest Vietnam, this town is forever etched in history for its decisive role in the end of French colonial rule.

Between 1945 and 1954, the region became the center of resistance against French colonization. The battle of 1954 marked the pivotal moment that ended French involvement in Indochina and initiated the downfall of the French Empire in North Africa.

Historic Battle Sites

The town has preserved its historical significance through memorials and battle sites that tell the story of this monumental victory. Some of the key battle sites were named after the French officers’ mistresses, with A1 Hill—known as ‘Elaine’ to the French—being one of the most famous. Another notable site is ‘Dominique’, where a large victory monument was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the defeat, now standing as the largest monument in the country.
