Sri Lankan Explorer

The Experience

In addition to covering the highlights, this program also allows time for visitors to venture off the beaten path and explore some of the lesser-known areas of Sri Lanka. Start in Kandalama, your base for exploring Anuradhapura; an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage site that is considered sacred to the Buddhist world. The next day, enjoy a visit to the second capital city of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa, and the ruins at Sigiriya, including the famous “Lion Rock,” frescoes, and water gardens. Proceed overland to Kandy, the cultural “capital” of the hill country, with a visit to the Dambulla rock temples and a spice garden and cooking demonstration en route. Upon arrival in Kandy, enjoy an introductory city tour featuring Kandy Lake, the downtown bazaar, a gem lapidary, a cultural dance performance, and the Temple of the Tooth Relic. On day two in Kandy, enjoy a visit to the Pinnawella elephant orphanage where wildlife professionals are dedicated to providing loving care to these gentle giants. Next, enjoy a stroll in Kandy’s lush Peradeniya Botanical Garden, the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. Then set off for Nuwara Eliya; once a British Hill Station, where you will learn how to “pluck tea like a local” in this charming city known as “Little England.” A trip to Horton Plains and the dramatic “World’s End” escarpment is sure to be a highlight during your time spent in the spectacularly beautiful tea region. Begin your next day with an exciting jeep safari through Bundala National Park, known for its varied birdlife, particularly flamingos. Then head to Yala National Park; known for its resident leopards, and enjoy two days of game viewing in Sri Lanka’s most game rich wildlife park. Spend the next two days in Galle; a pleasant port city surrounded by a magnificent Dutch Fort that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy an introductory tour of the fort and nearby attractions such as Unawatuna Beach and the Peace Pagoda. You final days will be spent relaxing on the beach in Ahungalla. On your last day, enjoy a visit to a Turtle Conservatory in Kosgoda before continuing to Colombo where you will connect to your International departure flight.
