Xiahe

Xiahe: A Gateway to Tibetan Culture Without Leaving China

Nestled in a scenic mountain valley on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Xiahe offers a deep cultural immersion for those who may not be able to reach Lhasa itself. It is home to the renowned Labrang Monastery, one of the largest and most influential centers of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet.

Discover Labrang Monastery

Founded in 1709, Labrang Monastery remains a living spiritual hub. Its whitewashed walls, golden roofs, and maze of alleyways are filled with chanting monks, incense, and the rhythmic spinning of prayer wheels. Each year, thousands of Tibetan pilgrims travel here, many adorned in vibrant traditional dress, to walk the monastery’s sacred kora (prayer path).

Experience Tibetan Nomadic Life

Just outside town, the high-altitude grasslands are home to yak-herding Tibetan nomads. These wide-open steppes echo with the songs of skylarks, creating a serene backdrop for witnessing a traditional way of life that has changed little for centuries.

Why Visit Xiahe?

  • A rare glimpse into authentic Tibetan culture within Gansu Province

  • Participate in spiritual rituals alongside locals at Labrang Monastery

  • Explore high grasslands with yak herds and Tibetan tents

  • A peaceful and less-touristed alternative to Tibet

Best Time to Visit Xiahe

The ideal time to visit is between May and October, when the weather is mild and the grasslands are lush and green. This is also when most festivals and pilgrimages occur.
